Hi Paul. Agree the lack of Queue function is super annoying, and your workaround is probably the best substitute.

With migration, I've had to do this a few times for others, on PCs and for some reason it's not just as simple as copying it across, often because of different OS, different usernames, wanting to share library etc. which makes it difficult.

I have been fighting iTunes for years and a lot of your points about the metadata are spot on. You can though shift an iTunes library from one computer to another provided it is all under the path-to-itunes-library directory and not symlinked elsewhere from within. I have happily shifted my entire library and metadata from mac to pc and back again and it mind bogglingly worked.

Think my pet hate of iTunes is the one of queuing stuff, my work around is use a play list and shift stuff in there and then play from that play list. It isn't ideal but it works, I would rather right click and select 'queue' though.

Hi Chris,

Would it be possible for you to send a couple of sample records that you suspect as being MARC-8 to Anne Stacey please? Her email address takes the form firstname.lastname@capita.co.uk

MarcGrabber (and it's shiny new replacement MarcGrab) should only send out UTF-8 as that's what Alto uses internally. We haven't had any issues with non Unicode records in Prism, so it would be good to get to the bottom of it.

If you'd like to see a lighthearted look at extracting data from MARC 21 I gave a presentation at the LDAL day at the British Library yesterday, slides are available here: http://www.slideshare.net/philjohn/linked-library-data-in-the-wild-8593328

Kind regards,

Phil

"Yes. I had actually already resolved the issue, and blogged about it, back in early May. "

That's quite impressive. Unless... you're not a time traveller, are you?

Hi, Thanks for sharing such a wonderful information. I must say that while reading your post I found my thoughts in agreement with the topic that you have discussed, which happens very rare.

“This material is provided for scholarly, educational, and research use only.” In an ideal world they would be under a more liberal licence (creative commons for example), though I imagine this would lead to many legal complexities to resolve, and don’t want this to detract from the good work that has been done here. It’s a massive step to release these so that they are publicly available.

Great article Chris!

Few things to add - the Revenue are already pretty tight on tax evasion where it's profitable for them to do so (proving offences can be hard - it's not worth spending 6 months prosecuting some cleaner who's bringing in a few thousand a year cash in hand; when it comes to dodgy oligarch types, their affairs can be so complicated that just bringing the court case costs $millions and takes armies of highly trained & expensive accountants and lawyers). However, evasion is particularly a sore point at the moment from a moral point of view (in that, anybody who's dodging tax is not "in this together" with the rest of society). The question is - should the Revenue pursue cases where they are likely to lose money, for the importance of a sense of fair play? Especially bearing in mind that's money that could be spent on frontline services.. not an easy one to answer.

Other point is - there aren't that many people making much over £150k, so even if you tax them heavily, it doesn't bring in that much additional money (bearing in mind they're already taxed at 40%). Also.. just as "debt" and "deficit" are two different things, so are "wealth" and "income". A DJ or footballer might make £200k/yr, but they're not necessarily rich in the way we might normally understand it. Even though in any given year, quite a few people might make that kind of money, most people don't do so for more than a few years (in their 20s for DJs & footballers, in their late 50s for County Council chief execs etc). So any extra tax on the rich is more about a sense of fairness than actually raising revenue (unless we were to implement Asset Tax like they do some places in continental Europe, but good luck getting that one past the electorate)

Defence, sure, we need to stop pretending to be a superpower, get rid Trident, our joke of an "independent" nuclear "deterrent" & the carriers, but in that case somebody will need to come up with a pretty convincing "plan B" for the communities in Scotland especially that depend on those projects.

Tories aren't doing much better, mind you - cutting Corporation Tax is all very well for companies that are profitable, but as they went ahead and implemented the Jobs Tax anyway (aka 1p on Employers' NIC stealth tax), fewer companies will be profitable in the first place. Would be much better IMO to slash employers' NICs, give companies scope to hire more people or give their existing staff better pay rises, and tax them a bit more if they make a profit at the end the year. However, because it's a stealth tax (mostly invisible to both shareholders & employees) it tends to go up rather than down.

As for cutting the tax on petrol - that's just straight up Full Retard, but that's one for another day :o)

I would be wary here if you are trying to convert your site to HTML5. For one the specification is still a W3C Working Draft (http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/). I would also recommend testing your blog in older browsers such as Internet Explorer 6, 7 and Firefox pre 3.5 (don't quote me on that) along with Safari 2 or less (maybe even Safari 3). Don't get me wrong, I would love to start marking-up explicitly in HTML5 but until the specification becomes slightly more non 'Working Draft' I'd hold off for a bit longer.
